Yesterday was the release day for the iPad as i presented, so, after a day, it seams people divided in two big categories, the first one considers it “the iFail” and totally rejects the idea of buying this product in the near future, the second category users tend to think that the iPad is just the start of a new generation for mobile computing and Internet access, and it’s normal for the first device to be limited in features.
I don’t know about limitations and first generation, but the lack of Flash support is kind of a setback, remember the good days when the iPhone was released and it was strange for such a “futuristic” device to lack support for one of the most important technologies that had improved the Internet so much in the last years, Adobe said that it’s up to Apple, they are the ones responsible for blocking and limiting the web experience on the iPhone.
But despite all, we, the users, we hoped, and waited, OS 2.0, OS 3.0, now OS 4.0 … the flash support never came to the iPhone.
To think that Apple has any plans to include it with the iPad is almost funny.
The iPad lacks of a camera, the iPhone had a 2MP camera in the era where 200$ phones had 5MP auto-focus camera.Apple included a camera in the latest iPod’s ,but the tablet device remains “blind”
One thing I’m looking forward to this device is the LED-backlit display, and the fact that it’s slim, impressive for such a device with 10 hours battery and 1Ghz CPU.
The main app’s on the device are the same as the ones on the iPod touch, but redesigned to take advantage of the full 1024×768 screen. This itself is a strange choice for a display format , 4:3 is kind of out of date and it’s clearly a setback for movies that are in HD (wide format 16:9, 16:10)
It’s hard to talk about something without holding it in hand, i will probably get the WiFi 16 GB version, but still, 500 euro’s in Romania means a lot of money for a student. So i don’t know where Apple is aiming with this device, but a student can’t just give you 500 euros/dollars just like that for a device that is basically a bigger iPod touch with better OS and better resolution.
Apple never mentioned OS 4.0 for the iPhone at this event, maybe WWDC will be the time to talk about this.
This iPad will sell well, very well, people will be curious in the beginning, but the question is where will this device be in the next 1,5 – 2 years from now…
Apple’s vision of the iPad is “a device that’s far more better in doing some things” but the truth is that it’s not so much better at anything, it’s just a nice device to have as a replacement for laptop if all you do is browse the web and listen to music.
Another thing, and last one; dropping an iPhone was kind of bad, imagine dropping this one by mistake, hey !, don’t say no, it can happen, but this iPad looks so fragile that even if a bend it the wrong way a little more it looks like I’ll get 2 smaller iPod’s out of it :P
The future of this devices will be phenomenal in the next years, so as i said already, if I’ll be able to get my hands on 500 euros , i will get myself an iPad. It has it’s side of good things and most of all, it’s fast !
